The familiar stiff, flat-crowned Boater has a surprisingly practical lineage. The Straw Boater hat originated in the Mid-19th Century Europe, evolving from the working attire of Venetian Gondoliers and British Naval Sailors. It was popularized in the 1880s as a lightweight, semi-formal summer accessory for men and women, often worn during leisure activities like rowing and sailing. It has been adopted in American Culture and is now considered Classic Americana.

Barbershop quartets wear Boater Hats or Skimmers as a nod to the Vaudeville Era in the late 1800s and early 1900s, quartets performed in Vaudeville to entertain crowds. Barbershop quartets originated in the late 19th Century, African American Communities of the American South. Barbershops served as vibrant community and social hubs where patrons would gather and spontaneously harmonize while waiting for services.
