US President Calvin Coolidge, in the 1920’s, famously, willfully ignored the “No Felt Day” (unwritten rule dictating men switch from straw to felt hats) and wore his Skimmer past September 15th. The flat-topped, stiff-brimmed straw boater hat was firmly cemented in pop culture by the silent film era’s collegiate and vaudevillian comedies. Several key Hollywood movies made this headwear iconic: The Sting, The Great Gatsby, The Freshman & White Christmas, to name a few.

The familiar stiff, flat-crowned Boater has a surprisingly practical lineage. The Straw Boater hat originated in the Mid-19th Century Europe, evolving from the working attire of Venetian Gondoliers and British Naval Sailors. It was popularized in the 1880s as a lightweight, semi-formal summer accessory for men and women, often worn during leisure activities like rowing and sailing. It has been adopted in American Culture and is now considered Classic Americana.

Straw boater hats (or “skimmers”) became staples of political campaigns in the late 19th and early 20th centuries because they were the height of summer fashion. Because major political conventions were traditionally held during the warmer summer months, candidates and delegates adopted the hat as a unifying uniform, using the wide brims and bands to prominently display campaign colors and names.

Barbershop quartets wear Boater Hats or Skimmers as a nod to the Vaudeville Era in the late 1800s and early 1900s, quartets performed in Vaudeville to entertain crowds. Barbershop quartets originated in the late 19th Century, African American Communities of the American South. Barbershops served as vibrant community and social hubs where patrons would gather and spontaneously harmonize while waiting for services. The uniquely American, a cappella style grew from these informal singing sessions. Modern Barbershop Quartets also love their Boater Hats.
